June’s Book Review

The Art of Making Memories- Meik Wiking

This book is written by the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen. He has been described as “the world’s happiest man” and “the Indiana Jones of Smiles” I was intrigued to learn more about how to create and use these memories to boost my happiness as well as the happiness of my family.

This book was quirky, full of fun pictures, an easy read, made me laugh and made me really think. I loved Meik’s take on the “good life”. He calls it a life of both purpose and pleasure and says “It (the good life) is when life offers satisfaction with the present, hopes for the future, and peace with the past. Happiness isn’t a one ingredient dish”

I enjoyed his tips for making memories and I will definitely be using them. My favorite tips were:

-Do something that scares you

-Step out of your comfort zone

-Does it pass the Ten Years’ time test? take into account what you are most likely to remember in ten years’ time

-Make the journey part of the experience

-Stay ahead of the forgetting curve by retelling

-Save your own glimpses of happiness (pictures/social media)

Pros of this book: full of fun, pictures, relatable, and light-hearted, even on some serious topics. Great tips and tricks and makes you really think about how they make memories and drive happiness throughout your life!

Cons of the book: Parts of the book became a bit long-winded or maybe it was just me reading the book late at night, but I will admit that I skipped a few paragraphs here and there when I had got the point and was ready to move on.

I am excited to hear your takeaways. Put your rating on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the most amazing book ever) and any key takeaways you had in the comments!
